Having been through this before, you would think that we wouldn't scramble to get everything together to get downstairs to the ICU, but scramble we do.....un-plug cell phones -- stow the cords....un-plug computer -- stow the cords....pack books, throw away wrappers, clean-up our little nook, and just about sprint to the elevators -- meanwhile calling Derek to let him know that Kyle is out of surgery. All of this took about 5 minutes -- perhaps we were anticipating that phone call?
We checked in at the ICU desk and were led to another quiet little cubby-hole to wait for the doctor....at about 5:30 p.m. he arrived. Told us that the surgery went very well, they took out quite a bit of bone and really opened up the space for the spinal cord -- removed scar tissue from the muscles of his neck and from the Dura (which is the protective covering that surrounds the spinal cord). He stated that Kyle would go for a CT scan and be in his room within an hour.....

Our short wait, for Kyle to arrive at the ICU -- was 2 1/2 hours long! I was not amused....finally we got to go into Kyle's room and see him! They asked us to hurry because he'd been asking for "Mumma". No further urging was needed.
In the ICU -- Below: An almost smile!
Ray and Susan Skinner came and visited with us and Kyle -- Scott and Sunny came and brought us some dinner. Kyle and I watched, "Dancing with the Stars", well, he started out watching with me, but fell asleep soon afterward.
Kyle had a pretty good night, and at about 7 a.m. his morphine infusion had stopped running -- now if it were me, I'd want it for a lot longer than 14 hours! They transferred him down to the surgical floor at around 11 a.m. He did very well, and we left the hospital at 5 p.m. -- 24 hours after his surgery was complete!
Was we got home he ate French Fries -- and went to bed.
Kyle home, propped up in bed by a foam wedge -- you'll see his treasured "Beauty and the Beast" movie and a stuffed "Simba" that Scott and Sunny brought him. He seemed so peaceful and comfortable......and looking at him, he looked like he was trying to be Yul Bryner in the "King and I".
So happy to be home, so thankful for the faith and prayers of family and friends! Where would we be without you?
