Kyle's First Day

Kyle has started doing volunteer work jobs at school and in the community.

 

At school he is working as a T.A. for the attendance office one day each week, and he works one day each week in the cafeteria -- don't know what he does there....

 

But it's his job in the community that is sooo incredibly exciting to me. 

 

You've all seen the millions of post of him with firefighters and police officers....well one of the aide's, Miss Carol, in his program, went to bat for him and got him a job at the Firestation!

 

Can you believe it?  He is over-the-moon! 

 

Wednesday, February 6th

....was his first day at the station.

 

I texted his primary aide, Miss Bridget, and asked if he had fun....this was her response....

"He was so happy he was skipping when he got back to school."

 

 

Miss Carol, texted me later in the day, and this is what she said,

"We are starting with Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  It was so awesome.  He did no work today, but got the royal tour of everything from where the firefighters eat, movie/tv room, their personal bedrooms, the bey where all the trucks are kept, the computer/office area, etc.  He will be sweeping the bay (where all the trucks are kept) and vacuuming their living quarters as his weekly jobs.  Gary the firefighter who we were with today, really is so excited about this.  He wants Kyle to be able to be part of everything while he is there.  If there's a drill going on he can stop working to be part of it.  He got to see two trucks leave the station and was right there in the bay.  It was soooooo exciting.  Kyle made such a great impression.  He met like 12 firefighters and shook everyone's hand, was introduced and introduced himself.  He was totally embraced and welcomed.  It was better than what I could have ever thought.  I will send pictures and keep you updated weekly.  I just feel so lucky to be part of this experience with Kyle."

They didn't tell Kyle until the night before that they were going to the fire station, but he was ready!  Wearing his shirt and hat.  He is now obsessed with getting a hat to match Firefighter Gary!

 

He was so excited.  I could not stop grinning as I read the amazing report from Miss Carol!  Oh the wonderful people who come into our lives and make them better by their kindness and concern.  This would not have happened for Kyle, if Carol hadn't gone to the Captain and pitched his cause.  The Captain then went to all the firefighters and asked for their in-put -- it was an amazing, positive vote to allow him to come and work with them.  It brings tears to my eyes!  What an opportunity, that Miss Carol saw, and worked to make happen.....to see his interest (read obsession here) and to do something to help his dream come true!  I'm looking forward to seeing his progress and growth because he gets to be in a place that makes him happy!

 

It's humbling to watch so many, do so much, for one individual, and in turn, in his own quiet way makes a difference in the lives of each one!
